In motherhood, things can get a little backwards. You want to be the best mom you can be and give everything to your kids, but can you truly do that if you’re not caring for yourself? Most mothers will tell you, the busy mom lifestyle is chaotic and there’s barely enough time and space to breathe let alone pursue self care. However, you want to be your best self for your kids, and it’s not doing them any favors to run yourself ragged. In part two of this blog series, we’ll share our tips for self-care, and how you can make self-care happen for yourself.

  • Schedule it in.

Put self-care time into your schedule. That will feel selfish and unnecessary at first, but it is so critical for making it happen. If you don’t make it a priority and block off the time to do it, it won’t happen. Things will come up. Your kids will need a ride to their friend’s house, you’ll find a massive load of laundry that “needs” to be done right now (it doesn’t), whatever it is. No matter the excuse, it will take discipline for you to step back and truly dedicate a chunk of time to self-care.

  • Find activities that energize you.

When you become a mom, that becomes your life. Many moms talk of forgetting or leaving behind activities that they love because there’s just not enough time in the day. When you begin prioritizing self-care, go back to those activities. Start by making a list of activities that you love to do. This could be taking a walk, working out, reading a book, doing craft projects, whatever. Go to that list in your self-care time, and do what you feel will give you energy and help you take a breath.

  • Realize that self-care is not one-way.

As wonderful as massages and long walks are, self-care may not always look like that realistically. You may have a particularly busy day and only have 30 minutes for self care, so you decide to take a bath, or read a book for 30 minutes. Take the time you’re given each day and make the most of it.

  • Use whatever time you can.

Often as moms, we have to create time for self-care. Early morning is a great time for self-care. It is before everyone is awake, it’s quiet, and it’s a great way to start your day. This can look like sipping coffee and reading the paper, journaling, working out, meditation, anything really as long as it gives you space to clear your mind and reset each day.

  • Don’t forget exercise.

Working out is a great tool for self-care that many women use. Exercise produces endorphins which are released when you exercise and trigger a positive feeling and reduced stress. Try switching up your normal workout routine and try something new, particularly a regimen that motivates you to continue exercising consistently.

  • Make sleep happen.

Sleep is one of the top things that are neglected by busy moms. However, it’s one of the most important ways you can take care of yourself. When you’re constantly running around and taking care of everyone else, don’t skimp on sleep. Sleep deprivation impacts your appetite, stress level, everything. It is recommended that you establish a consistent bedtime routine and a consistent bedtime that gives you enough sleep to feel rested.
